Hey, you. Yes, you there, living under that rock. Have you heard the news about Grand Theft Auto V? No? Well in case you haven’t, we’re here to tell you that the recent launch of the latest entry in the GTA series may be the largest launch event of this year, and probably for many years to come. This game is huge, and the amount of money it brought in on the first day of sales is simply staggering.
Yahoo! News reports that GTA V’s single-day sales total was a whopping $800 million, soundly trouncing the next-largest competitor by some $300 million bucks. Not even the largest Hollywood blockbusters rack in that kind of cash, and certainly not on a single day. Even more impressive, it took just 3 days to break a billion dollars.
But this is Grand Theft Auto we’re talking about, and Rockstar Games has been slowly hyping up its mega-blockbuster for months now. The all-new open-world game for the first time divides the story up amongst three main characters, which players can switch between at any time. Players are tasked with an assortment of larceny, escort, and assassination missions, using the three main characters in conjunction to pull off incredible capers unlike any other GTA before.
Not only that, but GTA V has numerous new online modes, including a persistent real-time world where players can join forces or duke it out in a variety of unique gameplay modes. GTA V is the biggest one-day entertainment launch of all time, outpacing even summer blockbusters like The Avengers, which over two days brought in just $200 million. This is pretty much the media event of a lifetime…and at its core, it’s still a game about stealing cars. Who says kids don’t like cars anymore?
