Hawaii was the last U.S. territory to become a state. Geographically speaking it is also America’s smallest outlier, all alone out there in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Because one cannot “road trip” to Hawaii, the rental car market is big business in the Aloha State. But a recent rash of rental car thefts has some questioning the security of a certain car.
The Honolulu Civil Beat reports that the Dodge Charger, a popular rental car in Hawaii, is apparently one of the easiest cars to break into. Now a Hawaii state senator is getting involved, demanding that rental car agencies warn customers of the Charger’s lock issues. This could get much bigger than that though.
According to the Civil Beat article, six out of every 1,000 Chargers are stolen. What’s more, thieves target rental cars specifically, hoping to score some mainland booty. One couple was off taking photos for their wedding invitations when thieves broke into their rental Charger, making off with valuables that included the woman’s engagement ring.
What’s more, rental agencies are apparently well aware of this issue, but do nothing to warn customers. This has state senator Will Espero stepping in to make rental agencies let customers know that the Charger can be broken into with a flat head screwdriver. That’s kind of a major design flaw if true, and hopefully something Chrysler looks into addressing.
Note to self…don’t rent Chargers in Hawaii.
