Salvatore Bono and Cherilyn Sarkisian, better known as the famous popstar duo Sonny and Cher, launched up the pop music charts at the same time that the Ford Mustang was dominating auto sales charts. It was a natural pairing from the very beginning, and it didn’t take long before Ford reached the same conclusion, pulling a pair of 1966 Mustang convertibles off the assembly line and sending them to famed customizer George Barris for a Sonny and Cher-style makeover.

This pair of unique Mustangs have survived decades in pretty much perfect condition and have become semi-regular customers on the auction circuit. The pair is up for sale again at Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas auction in a couple of weeks, offering buyers a rare chance to own a piece of both music and Mustang history.

Painted an elegant Murano Gold Pearl with dark brown side panels, Sonny’s Mustang was most certainly the more masculine of two, with the genuine bobcat fur upholstery and antique buff leather. Painted a pointed pink color and accented with red side panels, Cher’s pony car also included Ermine fur, Scottish leather upholstery, and pink suede, because of course it needed pink suede.

The two Mustangs have been a part of the Tammy Allen Collection since they last sold in 2009 for $198,000. The auction explicitly states that the Mustangs must be sold as a pair, so the buyer better have room for both in their garage. Both cars are thankfully equipped with 289 V8 engines, though their performance is hampered by a three-speed automatic connecting the motor and rear wheels.

But these particular Mustangs were more fashion statements than fast cars, and it’s just more proof of just how iconic the original pony car was to 1960’s popular culture.
