There is a whole world of super cars and exotic cars that, while comparatively rare, are still a fairly frequent sight in certain areas like Miami and Los Angeles. And then there are the hypercars, vehicles that cost more than the net worth of 99% of Americans, with unpronounceable names and features you’ve never heard of. Those big price tags come with big horsepower, and if you’ve got the means, you can easily own a 1,100 horsepower hyper car, like a Swedish-built Koenigsegg CCXR.
So how can a common super car like the Dodge Viper ever hope to compete? This Drag Times video shows that with a simple supercharger upgrade, the American-made Viper can give this million-dollar hyper car a run for its money.
The mid-engine, custom-built Koenigsegg CCXR is one of the fastest production cars in the world, powered by a 4.7 liter twin-supercharged V8 engine that will make about 1,098 horsepower on E100 ethanol. With an estimated top speed of 271 mph and a price tag of around $2 million, it is truly a rare breed of automobile. But a simple supercharger upgrade on the Dodge Viper SRT10 pumps it up to 750 horsepower, and as the video shows, the Viper gets a good jump on the CCXR.
With a new Viper costing under $100,000, and a Paxton supercharger system running another $7,000 to $8,500, the Viper still comes in at only about 1/20th the cost of the Koenigsegg, representing a veritable bargain in the dollar-per-horsepower segment. But is it enough to keep up? We won’t spoil the ending, but lets just say that this is a nail biting photo finish that came down to tenths of a second.
