There is nothing quite like a good burnout, and thanks to today’s modern technology, we never have to miss a moment of tire-shredding goodness. Whether it be camera phones or professional videography equipment, you can be sure that there are recording devices eare nearly everywhere. And even if they aren’t there, all it takes is a suction cup to get a great angle on an awesome burnout.
Jalopnik came across this video yesterday of a near-perfect shot of a strong burnout, followed by a tire blowout. Damn entertaining, we must agree.
The car in question in his video is a 1979 G-body-based Oldsmobile Cutlass. We’re assuming that the engine has received something in the way of mild modifications, as many Chevy V8’s do. Then again, the skidpad is clearly wet, so it wouldn’t take much power to get the wheels spinning. ANd once they start going, there’s nothing to stop them but the brakes.
Eventually all tires will explode, given a long-enough burnout, and this old rubber doesn’t take long to pop. It can be hard to appreciate the violence of a tire explosion from a football field away, but this up-close shot proves that they are nothing to be trifled with. We definitely enjoyed this video, though perhaps an even closer shot might be in order next time around. Just sayin’.
