The collectible car market is a crazy, kooky, and unpredictable beast. The same plain-jane muscle cars were selling for huge money just a few years ago have since plummeted in value. Yet at the same time, unique and rare classics like the Shelby Cobra Daytona have brought in unprecedented money at auction, shattering records and setting a high bar for collectible cars.
Just where the Dodge Challenger Hellcat will ultimately fall on the collectible car scale is anybody’s guess, though it’s probably a pretty safe bet that Hellcats will continue to accumulate value over the coming decades, and the car with the earliest VIN will almost certanly bring a small premium at auction. But what about Hellcat #666? Is it worth more than any other Challenger Hellcat? The owner of this uniquely-numbered Hellcat seems to think so, putting his 707 horsepower Challenger up for sale on Craigslist, asking a 50% price premium for the Number of the Beast on Craigslist. Worth it, or nah?
Without getting too Biblical up in here, there’s no denying that popular culture has taken the number 666 and totally run wild with it while adding little or no historical context. Yet people have purchased all sorts of odd collectibles for all sorts of odd reasons, and what with Dodge associating its supercharged Challenger with a fiery feline, somebody was bound to take advantage to try and make a quick buck.
Something similar happened with the Dodge Charger Hellcat VIN 666, which showed up on eBay with an asking price of $300,666. That seems like an insane sum, until you consider that the buyer of Hellcat VIN 001 paid $825,000 for the honor. That makes Challenger Hellcat 666 seem like a downright bargain.
Which is why we say the collector car market is kinda kooky.
