Since 1992, the Dodge Viper has been the flagship of Chrysler’s fleet. It was the fastest and most elite car until recently, when it became upstaged by SRT’s Challenger and Charger Hellcats. These cars have surpassed the Viper in power, producing 707 horsepower compared to the Viper’s 640. A few weeks ago we reported a circulating rumor that the 2015 Viper was going to be supercharged and was going to retake its crown as the most powerful car in the Mopar fleet. Until that day comes, we’ll all have to settle for the latest bump in power, as the Viper will only be receiving five more horses for 2015 – that’s all folks.
With the power for the 2015 Viper at 645, the Vipers fuel economy will be also be increased from 1 MPG to 20 MPG thanks to modifications of the 6-speed transmission. As hot rodders, we have to say Chrysler that a five horsepower increase is unacceptable.
The Viper is suppose to be Army Ranger leading the regular army into battle. Its suppose to be the car that delivers Europe some good old-fashioned red, white, and blue American grade-A top-choice beef sirloin whup-ass on the race track. Its suppose to be the fantasy car that every 14-year-old boy has a poster of in his room, the car that he day dreams of picking up a hot blond while involved in a high-speed car chase.
While 645 horses is miles ahead of your average car in terms of performance, its not enough for a Viper in 2015. The Dodge Viper is the F-22 of Mopar, while the F-15 (Charger) and F-16 (Challenger) are amazing machines in their own right, they are not the elite stealth fighter. The only light at the end of this long tunnel is that perhaps we’ll see a supercharged, 800+ horsepower Viper in the future. It can’t happen soon enough.
