How much is an original J Code 1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner worth? According to one Craigslist seller just under $70,000. Turning up for sale in the quiet farm town of Newville, Pennsylvania, is this rare 68 Hemi Road Runner which is part of an estate. The late owner purchased the car in the mid 90’s after a nut and bolt restoration. The car was rarely driven, and clocked only 63,000 miles since the restoration. The bulk of these miles were earned driving up and down his rural driveway. The Road Runner’s 426 is an original numbers matching Hemi with an A833 four speed manual which runs to a 3.54 Dana rear end.
Chrysler released the Plymouth Road Runner in 1968 as a minimalist, bare bones musclecar that could pull a 14 second quarter mile and sell for less than $3000. The interior was spartan with nothing more than cloth benches, a simple AM radio, a floor mounted shifter with no console and on the 426 Hemi models no AC. Performance options included front disc brakes, a Dana rear end to roast the tires and a 383RB, 440RB or 426 Hemi engine mated to either an A833 4 speed manual or a 727 Torquflite auto.
The Hemi produced 425 horsepower and 490lb which was enough to catapult this 3400 lb monster to a 13.5 second quarter mile. The owner passed away 6 years ago and the Road Runner has been since tuned up by a regular care taker who has driven it at least once a month. It’s a favorite car among enthusiasts, but is $70k a bit too steep on the pricing?
