Though its initial launch has been hampered by production delays, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a new take on an old nameplate, and it has a lot to live up to. Initial reviews seem positive though, and the new Cherokee could be a big hit with the soccer mom crowd. But what about performance enthusiasts seeking more than just the off-road capabilities the Cherokee Trailhawk is set to offer?
Motoring.com.au says that Chrysler executives are currently mulling the addition of a performance-centric Jeep Cherokee SRT4. But the only way they’ll bring it to market is if they can make enough money on it. So what does that mean for enthusiasts looking for a fast ride with room for the kids and camping gear?
It would not be a big jump for Chrysler’s SRT sub-brand, which has tackled SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee before. Nothing like a 6.4 liter HEMI V8 with 470 horsepower to wake up an old grocery getter, though the Cherokee would have to make due with a much smaller engine. The SRT4 moniker is only applied to four-cylinder engines, which could indicate that the new 2.0 liter turbo, codenamed the “Hurricane” engine, is slated for the Cherokee SRT4.
That is, of course, if Chrysler executives give the action the green light. Chrysler has been pickier about what cars it applies the SRT name to, though an SRT Dart would not be unwelcome either. It all comes down the dollars and cents; are there enough potential Cherokee buyers interested in a high-performance version with pockets deep enough to justify a premium price?
Let’s hope so.
