Katech specializes in late model GM engine building, and when it came to Chevrolet’s new LT5 engine, Katech took the GM crate 755 horsepower engine and got it over 1,000hp with bolt on mods.
To hit four digits, Katech went through various stages to get the LT5 where they wanted it. The first thing Katech did was add its Xtreme-Di fuel system, which includes an additional fuel pump, to the engine and ran it on 93 octane pump gas. As a result, Katech got 788 horsepower and 762 ft-lb of torque.
The next stage Katech performed was to convert the engine to run on E85. To do that Katech had to install a 30-percent overset of injectors which allowed the car to lay down an astonishing 925 hp and 859. ft-lb of torque.
Katech upgraded the upper pulley to one from GripTec and Z-Industries which boosted the power up to 992 hp and 991 ft-lb of torque.
To close the 8 horsepower gap and hit 1,000 horsepower, Katech ported the supercharger and added the Katech 103mm throttle body. This combination, right around 6,000 rpm, brought the LT5 to 1,013 hp and 1011 ft-lb of torque. Thats an incredible number to reach with some bolt on modifications and supercharger porting.
According to Katech, there was no need to tear into the engine because doubling up the high-pressure pump capacity and adding the 30-percent over Katech injectors gave the LT5 the fuel it needed to be able to put out big horsepower numbers.
The Chevrolet LT5 engine from the factory is a capable platform, and with Katech, 1000 horsepower is now an easy task with bolt-on parts.
Need more power? Don’t worry, Katech added twin turbos to this build and the engine hit 1,308 hp on E85. To Katech’s knowledge, this is the highest horsepower Gen 5 DI E85 powered engine every tested, and also the highest horsepower LT5 ever tested.
