Sammie Kelley of Poulsbo, Washington, is the owner of this 500 horse 1955 Chevy gasser powered by a 427 cubic-inch engine with a double roller cam. Kelley traded some carpet work for the engine and did the rest of the build himself. “I had a gasser like this in high school,” Kelley explained. “It was almost identical, but when you get married and have kids, you’ve got to get rid of the toys.”
He has had the car for about four years and it’s only been a month since it hit the road. That being said, this is more designed for the strip than the street. Fueling that big-block engine is a Holley double-pumper carburetor and it is followed up by a turbo 350 automatic transmission. “That’s my favorite engine,” Kelley said in regards to the 427 cubic-inch big-block that he has in the car.
With a fiberglass tilt front, all Stewart-Warner gauges, and impressive aftermarket headlights (not designed for street use), this is an example of a fresh built, classic Chevy gasser. This is the kind of thing we’d like to encounter on the raceway rather than at a car show, it certainly looks cool, but seeing it drive would be one better. The Hoosier race slicks on the back, set in the slightly enlarged fender holes would sure make for one heck of a burnout.
