California is known for its vibrant car culture with just about every type of era of car imaginable having events, shows, and sales dedicated to them throughout the year. In 2014, California is losing one of its premiere car shows–the Cherry’s Jubilee hot rod and muscle car show held in Pacific Grove. The image above was provided courtesy of seemonterey.com. This turn of events wasn’t due to a lack of interest, rather, “it’s the decision of the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation”, according to The Monterey Herald.

The Cherry’s Jubilee Motorsports Festival was set to celebrate its 22nd year in September before the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation announced that the show would not take place this year. In the past, the show attracted around 500 restored muscle cars and hot rods each year from all over California, as well as neighboring states. There were also countless show-goers that came out for the three-day event, filling up restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops on the Monterey Peninsula.
The car show acted as a fundraiser for the Foundation, bringing in sums like $35,000 in 2011 to go toward medical training, equipment, and upgraded facilities for the hospital’s health care system. However, the Foundation opted to cancel the event this year, citing the massive effort and amount of money it takes to put on the annual show.
According to The Herald, that $35,000 donated to the Foundation in 2011 came in after just over $118,057 was spent on and recuperated from putting on the show.
While the Foundation has canceled this year’s event, it did note that the Cherry’s Jubilee event and all of its activities deserve a closer look to determine their fate for the future and if other fundraising events may be better planned in the event’s place. Along with the Monterey Peninsula community, we hope this means that the car show will be back for 2015.
