NARRA Introduces New U.S. GT Championship

The North American Road Racing Association has announced that it will hold a new U.S. GT-car racing championship beginning in 2011. The championship is open to all GT-styled cars, divided into three classes which are determined by a weight / wheel horsepower (whp) calculation.

“Our philosophy for the U.S. GT Championship is simple: minimal rules,” explained Tom Antonelli, director of NARRA. “Provided it’s a GT car, you can “run-what-you-brung.” We’ll place you into the best class for a highly competitive, safe and fun race weekend.”

Competitors must submit a dyno report and undergo an official weight check during each event. The GTR-1 chassis set at 6.50 or more pounds/whp, while the GTR-2 class specifies 8.70 or greater pounds/whp. The GTR-U is an unlimited class without any restrictions on horsepower or weight.

The first round of the Championship is to be held at Road Atlanta, Feb. 25-27. Additional venues include Sebring International Raceway, Virginia International Raceway and Daytona International Speedway.

“We expect to see gentleman and professional drivers and teams field a variety of Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, BMW and Lamborghini cars, and of course Dodge Vipers,” continued Antonelli. NARRA is also the promoter of the Viper Days driver-education program and the Dodge Viper Cup pro series.
