It’s no secret that Chrysler, and more specifically the Dodge brand, has a rich performance and motorsport history that the company is not shy about looking back to, both for inspiration and to celebrate their legacy.
With FCA’s recent repositioning of Dodge to specifically be the group’s American performance brand, it’s allowed them to open up the taps both in terms of their enthusiast products and to market Dodge vehicles as such.
The result is that Dodge commercials are getting much more entertaining now that they’re not in an odd conflict with SRT, which was a trim level, then briefly a sub-brand, and now is back to being a trim level.
The latest evidence of this new push for the Dodge brand is the new commercial above. Entitled Discovery, the spot opens up in a cloud of tire smoke, with the footage running in reverse to reveal a Scat Pack Charger and a similarly-spec’d Scat Pack Challenger roasting the meats.
As we pan to the left, a pair of what appear to be Dodge Brothers Model 30-35s (which boasted nearly double the horsepower of the rival Ford Model T) are lighting up their tires as well, though this footage runs forward seamlessly without cutting between the two pairs of cars, giving the commercial a hypnotic effect.
We’re asked “Do you know how hard it is to do a commercial with a Dodge… and not do a burnout?” Well in our experience, just getting in a high performance modern Mopar like the 6.4-liter powered Scat Pack cars and not driving like a complete hooligan is an exercise in restraint on its own, so we can only imagine that BURNOUTS are typically circled and underlined on the whiteboard at pretty much every Dodge commercial pitch meeting, which is totally fine by us.
