The iconic lines of a classic GM A-Body are a thing of beauty, but the driving experience can often feel disconnected from the road. The soft, factory suspension that was acceptable decades ago results in significant body roll, making the car feel less stable and predictable in turns.
BMR Suspension is aiming to solve that classic problem with its new, complete sway bar kit (SB400), a modern, bolt-on solution for 1964-1972 A-Bodies.
There are two beefy bars made from DOM steel tubing, with a 1.25-inch bar for the front and a 1-inch bar for the rear inside the kit. BMR uses a modern cold-forming process, which is superior to conventional hot-forming. This helps the steel resist torsional fatigue—the constant twisting force a sway bar endures—and allows it to retain its shape and performance characteristics for years. The kit also ditches the original soft rubber bushings for high-performance, 88-durometer polyurethane versions. These much stiffer bushings, which are also greaseable for a long, quiet life, drastically reduce the unwanted flex, or “deflection,” that plagues stock setups. BMR also includes robust thrust washers to ensure the bars cannot move side-to-side during aggressive cornering.
This hardware translates into a massive performance increase, offering up to a 400 percent gain in front sway bar rate and a 200 percent gain in the rear compared to the stock parts. For the driver, this means a much flatter, more planted feel in corners, inspiring confidence to push the car harder.
For enthusiasts who take their cars to events, the front sway bar kit features two-hole adjustability. This allows the driver to easily change the bar’s stiffness to fine-tune the car’s handling balance for street performance, autocross, or road racing applications.
BMR Suspension designed the SB400 kit as a complete, bolt-on solution that takes about two to three hours to install. Available in either a red or black hammertone powder coat and proudly made in the USA, the kit includes everything needed to transform the driving dynamics of a classic A-Body.
It’s a good way to bridge the gap between vintage style and contemporary performance, allowing owners to enjoy their classic cars in a whole new way.
