While most of us could care less if every part on our classic car is βperiod correct,β there is a small but devoted cult of car collectors who want either the original parts, or nothing. Many of these guys will go to the farthest corners of the country to hunt down the perfect part, and pay princely sums of money to ensure that everything on their car is from the correct time and place.
That is probably the target market for this set of original 1970βs racing tires up for sale on RacingJunk.com. And the asking price for all this old rubber? Oh, only $250,000.
There has been a resurgence of interest in the past few years in the history and fate of old race cars. Most of these old racers were either wrecked, lost, or ruined, though a few have survived the intervening 40 years, and many more are current projects under a period-correct restoration. So these guys are going to need some original tires to shoe their cars.
These tires might be the ticket. The seller says he has between 20 and 40 tires sold to him by Parnelli Jones himself back in the 70βs. The tires in this collection are up to 18 inches wide and still have the big old βFirestoneβ emblazoned on them in white. Still, with an asking price of around $10,000 a tire, weβd probably settle for period correct replacements instead. Just sayinβ.
