The return of the Viper under the SRT badge has gotten Mopar fans the world over hot and heavy. And it really is a big deal, as Chrysler’s halo car has undergone a dramatic transformation, while sticking close to its roots as a road-racing, fire-breathing, side-exhausting American supercar. It took many months for Chrysler to reveal the final look of the SRT Viper…but the tease ain’t over yet.
Ralph Giles, chief in charge of the newly formed SRT brand, tweeted the above photo, which he says is of the new Viper GTS-R, the racing version of the Viper heading to the American Le Mans Series.
The Viper GTS-R has a long, winning history across multiple motorsports venues, and racing has always been a core component of what makes the Viper great. Chrysler has wasted no time in entering the Viper GTS-R into the premier American road racing series, the American Le Mans Series. SRT says that the new Viper GTS-R is built for speed, reliability, and durability, and it will need all three to make an impact in the ALMS.
While the VIper GTS and GTS-R are similar cars, differences are being made in order to enter the ALMS. Among them, the Viper will run a restrictor plate because its 8-liter engine is much larger than the maximum 5.5 liters other manufacturers use. It will also run on E-85 ethanol rather than premium gasoline, and much of the bodywork is a carbon-fiber composite.
In other words, it’s the same snake in a different skin, and we can’t wait to see more than just a tweeted photo.
