We’ve got to hand it to the guys and gals over at Chrysler as nothing seems to deter them from offering some of the most powerful cars on American roads today. In particular we mean the SRT8 lineup of cars, many of which offer over 470 horsepower in vehicles you might not expect, like the four-door Charger or the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’s a little crazy to think about buying an almost 500 horsepower SUV…but if you’ve got the means and desire, why not?
And according to Edmunds Inside Line, Chrysler isn’t stopping at the Grand Cherokee. Apparently a Dodge Durango SRT8 is possible…but will they build it?
They certainly can, that’s for sure. Both the five-passenger Grand Cherokee and the seven-passenger Durango share the Mercedes M-class platform, which means putting the 6.4 liter HEMI V8 in would be a relatively simple surgery. And it is seriously being considered as a package, along with all-wheel drive, Brembo brakes, and a host of high-tech features.
But Edmunds reports that slow sales of the Durango R/T model (just 7% of sales thus far have been of the performance model) may doom the Durango SRT8. Another issue is pricing; the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is almost $55,000, and while Chrysler is considering “decoupling” certain feature, the price can only come down so far. So is a Durango SRT8 doomed? Or can Chrysler make it happen?
