Every year, LS fans the world over attend the annual Holley LS Fest held at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. And every year we get to see the best of the best in the LS world, from factory cars to LS swaps, and everything in between at the largest LS engine powered gathering in the country. Activities that can be found at the event cover cars shows, drag racing, drifting, and enough fun for the entire family.
The School of Automotive Machinists (SAM) has teamed up with Lingenfelter Performance to sponsor the Battle at the Green in 2016, dubbed the ultimate COPO Camaro race. Both companies have supported the COPO Camaro class since its inception and now they’re sponsoring the ultimate drag race with a purse of $10,000 to the winner, with a $1,000 payout for the runner up.
The race will fall under NRHA rules for Stock and Super Stock eliminator, with a qualified pro ladder. SAM’s Judson Massingill and Lingenfelter’s Mike Copeland developed the idea of offering up the added incentive to competitors. SAM has competed at every Holley LS Fest, and campaigns a COPO Camaro in NHRA Stock Eliminator, crewed by SAM students.
Holley’s Bill Tichenor said, “This is exactly what we originally envisioned for LS Fest. We wanted to host a party and let the industry make it their own. We are super excited that the guys at Lingenfelter and SAM came up with this idea and we can’t wait to see it unfold. Each COPO since 2013 has come from the factory with Holley EFI and each naturally-aspirated COPO has a Holley Hi Ram intake, so it is only fitting that we spotlight the COPOs at the Holley LS Fest.”
Lingenfelter Performance Engineering has been dedicated to performance for over 42 years, led by owner Ken Lingenfelter, who’s desire for high performance vehicles and custom building has provided GM vehicles the combination of high horsepower and driveability. You can find out more about Lingenfelter at its website, with performance modifications for cars, light trucks, and SUVs.
The School of Automotive Machinists has graduates in various forms of motorsports, including NASCAR, NHRA, IndyCar. Based in Houston, Texas, SAM has evolved drastically since 1985, when founders Judson and Linda Massingill saw the need for a qualified performance engine builders program.
