In 1964, Shelby introduced its Ford small-block V8-powered Cobra to the FIA racing organization as a competitor in the World Manufacturers Championship. Though the little Cobra didn’t win, it did leave an impression on racers and buyers, and 50 years later we still talk about it in a revered, respective tone. It’s not a car to be trifled with.
To help celebrate this significant milestone of automotive competition, Shelby American is releasing a limited run of special continuation models. The CSX7000 Shelby 289 FIA Cobras will be limited to just 50 units, with a starting price just under $95,000. And that’s if you want the fiberglass model; if you want an aluminum body, prepare to shell out nearly $160,000. And you don’t even get a drivetrain.
That’s a lot of money to sink into a piece of nostalgia, but for those who can’t quite afford an authentic Shelby FIA Cobra race car, it’s economical alternative. For the money, you get an authentically-reproduced fiberglass or aluminum-bodied Cobra, entered into the official Shelby American registry.
Safety features such as disc brakes and a stronger frame have been worked into the design, though an authentic black interior and “Viking Blue” paint job maintain an aura of nostalgia. Shelby even includes a stainless steel exhaust for a Ford small-block V8, though its up to you to source a powertrain of your choosing. We’re sure if you ask Shelby nicely though, they’ll be happy to sell you an engine fitting of your new ride.
