Shelby American’s history is closely intertwined with sports car racing. Their famous innovations like the Corba, original GT350, and GT40 program have kept the company in fierce competition all over the country. With this new Super Snake Wide Body concept, Shelby seems to having a bit of nostalgia for their early street-machine days.
This Super Snake Wide Body Mustang concept was put together to test the envelope of performance for the 2015+ Mustang chassis. To make it more than just a straight-line monster, the wide body features increase the stature about 4” at the rear, and 2.5” up front, with body panels stretched to fit. Under the flared wheel wells are wide wheels and tires, and the concept rides on adjustable coil-overs, beefed up spindles and hubs, and hardened wheel studs — it also has added stopping power thanks to the larger brakes. Powering the Super Snake concept is an engine that makes 750 horsepower.
The look of the concept isn’t as ‘typical’ to American car culture as you’d except from Shelby. It almost looks more like a classic Celica or Skyline than a classic Mustang, which might be the motivation of the company. This concept is likely out there to gauge reaction from the public, and if it’s well-received, we can probably expect to see it up for public sale soon enough — if not, it’ll be one of many DOA concepts that never landed.
