Sleek ’60s Ride: Larry Crosby’s 1961 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

Though GM would later cast the nameplate amidst the atrocious “land yacht” full-size cars on the 1970s, for a time, the Pontiac Catalina was without a doubt a majestic automobile. Second-generation models like the one seen here are exemplary of early ’60s styling and design that didn’t last long, but thanks to owners like Larry Crosby, leave an enduring impression when you see them on the road.

Catalina_2Lou Costabile, as part of his ongoing series “My Car Story,” has been venturing around the country for the better part of three years, documenting the rides and owners that catch his eye. Just as the new year was rounding the corner, Costabile set his sights on this ’61 Catalina, and couldn’t resist the opportunity to meet Mr. Crosby and get the lowdown on this cool convertible.

“It’s pure stock, a rare 1-of-1 car,” says Crosby. “333-horse, 389ci engine with a four-speed transmission. It’s only a five-option car, and it’s been restored for a years, and I drive it fairly frequently.”

Crosby’s passion for the Catalina dates back to when he first met his wife, a time when he drove a dark blue version. “Over the years, we always wanted to duplicate that car,” he explains. “It took me a few years, and I ended up finding two, so I restored both cars, and this one is the rarer of the two.”

Through research done by the Pontiac Historical Society, Crosby was able to learn that his Catalina is a 1-of-1 car.

Through research done by the Pontiac Historical Society, Crosby was able to learn that his Catalina is a 1-of-1 car.

Crosby was able to confirm this by checking through the Pontiac Historical Services, a website that deals in researching and reprinting information all about one Pontiac or another. With $65 and a VIN, folks like Crosby can receive: a copy of the factory invoice or billing history; a letter decoding the options (when necessary); a copy of a dealer order form for that year; and other specific information for that year and model Pontiac, if available.

“It was determined that this engine and transmission combination was one of just 123 sold in 1961, and this is the only Catalina convertible that had that combination,” says Crosby. Complete with its Tradewind Blue paint and matching top, the car is indeed a sight to see.

Can you appreciate the grace and style behind this peerless Pontiac? Or is it a car best left forgotten? Deposit your two cents in a comment below.
