While much of Tesla’s latest headline grabbing announcements center around the new P90D – the latest iteration of the Model S which has introduced the Spaceballs-inspired “Ludicrous Speed”, supplanting “Insane Mode” with a 0-60 sprint of just 2.8 seconds, as well as the new model’s extended range other improvements, something that may have gotten lost in the press barrage is the fact that the new Model X may turn out to be the quickest factory SUV ever produced.
Due to roll out of Tesla’s factory in the coming months, the SUV is slated to also receive that P90D’s “ludicrous” acceleration algorithm, which allows the P90D to draw 1,500 amps instead of 1,300 amps from a dead stop and beyond 60 miles per hour – something the P85D could not do.
With this added capability, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk estimates the new SUV could go from zero to sixty in just 3.3 seconds, according to Bloomberg: “Tesla will also offer Ludicrous Mode for its coming Model X SUV, which will probably clock in at zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, according to Musk. “We haven’t tested it yet, so that’s just a guess,” he said.”
Indeed the notion of hitting sixty miles per hour from rest in an SUV at the same rate it takes a Dodge Viper TA to do the deed sounds incredible.
And while it’s easy to be skeptical of such a bold claim, it’s worth pointing out that the Model S has made good on every claim Musk has made about it, perhaps aside from the “end of range anxiety” software fix that was announced last year. That turned out to be not much more than a navigation feature that ensured Tesla drivers were always within range of a supercharger facility.
Still, his track record seems pretty solid at this point.
