The Federal Bureau of Investigation, better known as the FBI, has a long history of employing unconventional means of keeping up with the bad guys, both metaphorically and literally. In the 1980s, the FBI found themselves literally falling behind gun and drug runners driving the high-powered sports cars bought with their ill-gotten money.

Per request of the FBI, the chip was removed and Buick added the 145 mph speedometer.

This led the FBI to seek out more powerful cars of their own including, as it is rumored, special Buick Regal T-Types and Grand Nationals with a much higher top speed. SSP Central sheds some light on these long-rumored government supercars.

The story goes that the FBI approached Buick about making a faster version of their Grand National and Regal T-Types. Buick removed the speed limiter chip and added a 145 mph speedometer, though the car was capable of just 140 mph. That was still an improvement over the 124 mph limit on standard Grand Nationals.

There are also rumors, backed up by former FBI agents, of Regal T-Types outfitted with bench seats, column shifters, and a shotgun rack in the back. If that isn’t a badass government ride, we don’t know what is. These workhorses saw a lot of driving though, with many racking up over 100,000 miles in just three years of service…and we doubt the G-men went easy on them either.

Somebody needs to make this a movie.
