Wonder Woman, portrayed by actress Lynda Carter, was a crime-fighting patriot who was determined to seek truth and justice. Here, she is pictured in a scene next to a 1939 Plymouth De Luxe Sedan driven by fellow character Steve Trevor, played by Lyle Waggoner. Photo from www.imcdb.org

48. Wonder Woman: 1938 Oldsmobile Six Business Coupe, 1938 Packard Eight Sedan, And 1939 Plymouth De Luxe Sedan

When “Wonder Woman” first aired on television as a season one, episode one, two-hour movie on Nov. 7, 1975, I was just 10 years old, and very impressionable (as most of us are as kids). I recall being in awe of this character, and all she could accomplish given a pure and compassionate heart for truth and justice.

Set in the era of World War II through the entire first season, we meet Princess Diana (Lynda Carter) as a timeless goddess living with her many other gifted sisters on an unchartered Paradise Island somewhere over the Bermuda Triangle – an island that has never been discovered.

When an airplane piloted by Air Force pilot Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) crashes after a dog fight with a Nazi plane, Diana is compelled to help, and volunteers to return the man to Washington, D.C. Having never seen anything of the world., Diana decides to stay and fight the good fight. She adopts the secret identity of Diana Prince and begins working for the government (and with Trevor) to thwart the Nazi regime, and save humanity. After all, Wonder Woman’s crime-fighting attire – an American-themed red, white, and, blue suit with gold accents, stars, cuffs, and headband, along with her magic lasso would certainly help protect the nation against such enemies!

This 1938 Oldsmobile Six Business Coupe made a flashy appearance in the World War II-themed first season of “Wonder Woman.”

Several classic cars were featured in the first made-for-television movie, adding to the legitimate WWII feel of the timeline. These included a 1938 Oldsmobile Six Business Coupe, 1938 Packard Eight four-door sedan, and a 1939 Plymouth De Luxe Sedan painted drab military green and driven by Trevor. At some point, in most episodes, Wonder Woman would lift the rear wheel of a vehicle off the ground to stop the bad guys from escaping, and this episode was no exception.

The episode plots were often shallow and far-fetched. Did we care? No. We hoped with every episode Trevor would recognize Wonder Woman as his true love … I mean how could he not? The television series was one of the most successful Marvel Comics franchises and continued its run four more years, through 1979. In addition, Carter cemented her role and will forever be known as Wonder Woman in our hearts, and at Halloween, when we put on her costume and pretend we are the defender of the universe.
