49. Mike & Molly: 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

The epitome of cool, and one of the most loved and admired iconic cars to ever define the 1950s, is, without doubt, the ’57 Chevy Bel Air. Much to the delight of viewers, one gorgeous two-door post 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 150/210 Hardtop Coupe in Matador Red and India Ivory made its way into an episode of the popular television comedy series, Mike & Molly (2010-2016).

The first season introduced us to the happy couple, who met at a support group and began dating. Through the comedic ups and downs, and getting through the challenges of life, family, love, and partnership, the couple becomes engaged in episode 24 of the final season and heads into season two.

Airing on October 17, 2011, episode four of season two, titled “’57 Chevy Bel Air,” centers around Mike (played by Billy Gardell) and Molly (Melissa McCarthy) budgeting finances for their upcoming nuptials and temptation of a classic car. When their buddy Vince (Louis Mustillo) brings the ’57 around to show Mike, he is smitten, and buys it for $7,800 with the intention of warming Molly up to the idea of ownership by taking her for a drive.

Molly, believing she has finally convinced her betrothed to rein in his spending and to communicate openly about money, tells Mike that maybe they can find a way to manage the purchase. And then, the truth comes out. Upon discovering Mike already has the pink slip in hand, she is furious that he has dismissed their discussions on spending, especially on such a large purchase – leading to another discussion about making decisions as partners in life.

Vince agrees to buy the Bel Air back from Mike for $7,250, and that was the last we saw of the Tri-Five. By episode 24 the couple is married in the season two finale.

In real life, actor Gardell is a huge car buff, and owns a red 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air that he enjoys working on and driving whenever he can. Perhaps it will make an appearance in a future episode.
