If there is any automobile from the 1960s that left an indelible mark on the auto industry, it is without a doubt the Shelby Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s iconic sports car squeezed a big engine into a little body, and then went on to dominate sales and motorsports events across the world. Today, real Cobras can easily fetch seven-figures on the auction block, and companies have been churning out replicas for decades.
The car in this story is obviously not the real deal…but then again, it’s one of the most outlandish and wicked Cobras we’ve ever seen. Speedhunters is responsible for bringing these excellent photographs of Magnus Jinstrand’s custom carbon fiber Cobra, which boasts a supercharged Mercedes V-12 engine.
Read that one more time: a supercharged Mercedes V-12 engine, stuffed into a Cobra replica. The 6.0 liter V-12 engine originally came out of a 2001 Mercedes-Benz CL600, where it made about 322 horsepower across a very wide powerband. Obviously that isn’t enough power for this Cobra, so a Lysom twin-screw supercharger was added to the equation, boosting power to 492 ponies at the wheels.
Madness, you say? That isn’t even the end of it. A C4 Corvette front and rear suspension have been adapted to Jinstrands Cobra, and a Getrag six-speed manual transmission sends power through a twin-plate clutch. Carbon fiber has been used liberally to reduce weight, creating an incredible look that is part futuristic, part post-apocalyptic, and immediately recognizable. Brilliantly done, if we do say so ourselves. What engine would you stuff into a Cobra if you had no limitations?
