Video: 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Walkaround

2015 may be the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, but it isn’t alone in celebrating its golden anniversary. The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe first debuted 50 years ago, and for everybody who missed out on the chance to own one of the original six Shelby supercars, a second chance has been granted. The 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe is an authentic reproduction of the original timeless classic, but with a few modern additions that make it much more livable day to day.

daytona-walkaround-3Shelby American put out the above video as a detailed walkaround for all us regular folk who can’t afford the $179,995 starting price (without an engine, mind you). But that’s the cost of owning an authentic Shelby these days.

So what do you get for starter-home money? Well a fiberglass body for one, as you’ll have to shell out $349,995 for the aluminum shell, though both will thankfully include 50th anniversary badging, as well as a place in the official Shelby registry. As Lance Standard from Hillbank Motorsports points out though, the new Cobra Daytona Coupe comes a feeling of authenticity, but with modern conveniences. For power, this particular example has a Shelby-fied 351 Windsor stroked to that most magical of numbers, 427 cubic-inches.

Lance speaks of how, even with the air conditioning running and temperatures exceeding 100 degrees during daytime desert driving, the Cobra Daytona Coupe performed with a cool engine and a cool cabin. Not so much a trailer queen as a driver’s car, Shelby did feel the need to add things like power steering and even the option for a radio to add some tunes to your ride.

Yet the feeling of originality is never far away either, whether it be the FIA-style 15-inch racing wheels or the authentic Guardsman Blue paint job with Wimbledon White stripes. But you’ll be thankful for the modern Bilstein coilover suspension and Wilwood 4-piston caliper brakes, whether you’re dipping around back roads or the race track.

There’s 11 minutes of Shelby swooning available in this video if you really want to torture yourself. Then again, maybe this is the motivation you need to buy a cheaper kit Cobra Daytona Coupe kit car for yourself. It might not belong in the Shelby registry, but the seat of your pants probably can’t tell the difference either.
