By now, most people have had it up to here with reality shows. These shows, by default, wouldn’t be interesting standing on their own merits because let’s face it: reality isn’t all that entertaining.
But to make these shows appealing, they have to show us the seedy underbelly of real life as some unfortunate people know it, and try to make them a star. With the likes of Snooky and Honey Boo-boo to the credits of reality TV, we’ve just about seen it all.
One way to enhance the entertainment value of these shows is to show us all the unpleasantries of the show – the fighting, the arguing, throwing things, bleeped out verbal exchanges and character assassinations, the whole nine yards. Why, it’s almost like growing up again and showing dad the report card. Well, that’s another story, never mind.
For the most part, these shows bring supposedly regular people into our living rooms to show us that other people have miserable lives, and we get to watch them destroy themselves weekly, or if the particular station is suffering, we get to see these one-card-short-of-a-full-deck miscreants every night. Oh, the joy!
There have been a few automotive themed shows that gained and lost their appeal: who can forget the drama from Boyd Coddington’s crew, or the Teutels? We all have drama in our lives, but these shows bring us, basically, nothing but the drama. Do we really need another one of these shows – this time with car designers? It’s like Hell’s Kitchen except with car designers. Maybe not.
It’s true, er… truTV… that this summer will bring us Motor City Masters, presented by Chevrolet, and all the drama behind a group of ten designers who will perform what normally takes three months and produce a concept design in just three days. The video above reels us in with little tidbits of the first show, the drama is the highlight reel. Half way through, they beg the question, “who will blow a gasket” while showing a tender moment with one of the participants wiping a tear from his eyes. Awww, isn’t that precious?
Are you ready for Motor City Masters? If so, tune in to truTV Network this summer to see all the drama unfold. And if you want us, we’ll be out driving our musclecars somewhere, you can fill us in later, mkay?
