Video: Creating “The Beast” for This Summer’s Hottest Blockbuster

The name “The Beast” is sure to conjure up images of Godzilla, the Loch Ness Monster and many other mythical creatures, but in this summer’s hottest blockbuster, the name fittingly goes to a massive beast of a vehicle – the bullet-proof presidential limo. Staring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, White House Down is sure to be a hit, but in this trailer of sorts above, it’s not about the lead characters. Rather, it’s about the lead vehicle and how producers and crew alike created this notorious vehicle.

Directed by Roland Emmerich, White House Down is an action thriller about a man named John Cale (played by Tatum) denied of his dream job with the Secret Service. So, instead of disappointing his daughter Emily Cale (played by Joey King) with the news, he takes her for a tour of the White House. But as the tour is taking place, the White House is overtaken by a paramilitary group. With little official training, Cale is forced into a position of protecting the president and his daughter before it’s too late. The Beast, the presidential limo, holds a staring role in all the chaos.

So how do you build a vehicle that isn’t exactly on the up-and-up when it comes to public information? Well, if you’re Action Vehicle Supervisor Graham Kelly, you get inventive!

beastcrashUsing the headlight from a 2009 Cadillac Escalade, Kelly and his crew scaled everything on the entire vehicle from an image of the real presidential limo. With scaling complete and some creative liberties taken when it came to things like the interior design, The Beast was created, custom piece by custom piece. Now that’s our kind of movie car!

Completed, The Beast is literally a beast, standing nearly 6 feet tall, stretched 40 inches from its base Suburban chassis, widened by over a foot and sporting semi trailer-esque 36-inch wheels. The limo also features doors over 6 inches thick to “accommodate the armor” and bullet-proof glass. Essentially, the vehicle was built to give the impression that it’s impenetrable.

Set to hit theaters on June 28th, White House Down is sure to impress. But now that you know what went into creating one of the action thriller’s leading vehicles, you can sit in awe even more!
