We’ve seen it all before: someone has a classic car that they need to sell; it needs some TLC and the owner wants a small fortune for it. To the owner, that’s their baby; it has sentimental value and they don’t really want to sell it, they just need the money.
To us, we start adding up all the extra money we’re going to spend, the long nights, weekends we could be out cruising, and we might just end up where the seller is: we just don’t have the time or money for the car. Sometimes a project car is only worth what you’re willing to put into it, and it may never get finished – which is why many get sold as a project car.
A new show debuting on the Discovery Channel this September 1st, at 10:00 pm, aims to put the neglected car together with a crew that will get it back on the road. The show is called Highway to Sell, and it features Dennis Pittsenbarger, an automotive expert and familiar face around our own Power Automedia YouTube channel, with Slick from Slicks Garage – a shop that builds customs on anything with wheels. The pair will seek out cars for sale that are in need of some TLC, and they’ll spend their own time and money to take the neglected classic and turn it into a worthy street machine.
Of course, with all of this “free” work, there’s a catch, right? Yes, there is. An agreement is made up front that the car will be taken to the shop, and once the work is completed the car goes to auction and the original owner has a choice: either they can bid on the car to win it back at a discounted price, or take their chances with the auction and take their percentage of the final price when the hammer drops. Pittsenbarger and Slick must do their best to make the car worthy of bringing in the big bucks, because if it doesn’t – they may lose more than the owner does. Be sure to check it out on the Discovery Channel this September 1st.
