Dr Pepper was first created around 1885 in Waco, Texas, even before Coca-Cola. It achieved national distribution in 1904 and has been with us ever since. However, popular culture suggests that Coke was the only soft drink that mattered, but can you name an old Dr Pepper promotion?
Here’s one: This Dr Pepper “Charger, get goin’ again!” promotion from 1968 is the perfect example. The prize? A Dodge Charger for each day of the week.
With broad shoulders, a flying buttress roofline, and “Coke bottle” profile, the Charger barged into the 1968 model year with prom king looks and varsity performance potential.
Moving up from the base Charger was the R/T which, along with the Coronet R/T, was the first time the R/T designation was used by Dodge. As a member of the Scat Pack, twin bumblebee stripes graced the rear end (but could be deleted upon request).
And as the Scat Pack was all about performance, it only made sense to install Dodge’s 440 Magnum as standard motor as standard equipment. Rated at 375 horsepower, most other competitors needed a few upgrades on the order form to match the Charger R/T’s power. So what was the Charger R/T’s own upgrade? King Kong, otherwise known as the 426 HEMI!
It was only natural for Dr Pepper to choose the all-new Charger for its “Charge, get goin’ again!” give-away. But who needs seven cars? Ya mean you don’t need a blue (QQ) one for Monday, yellow (SS) for Tuesday, Wednesday green (GG), Thursday bronze (MM), turquoise (LL) for Friday, Saturday red (PP), and white (WW) for Sunday?
After some research, we couldn’t find out if any of the seven cars still survive. We wonder which day the winner kept?
