For whatever reason, Dodge sure seems to have the best commercials. Even today’s television spots starring baritone “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall as the proverbial voice of America’s dwindling manhood, speak loud and proud to the brand’s sometimes unclear commitment to performance (An R/T Caravan? Seriously?). Wandering around YouTube, we came across this discolored and grainy snipet of famous Dodge ad man, Sheriff Joe “JW” Higgins busting this new-for-1971 Challenger.
For you younger muscle car lovers who aren’t familiar with characters like Sheriff Higgins (or Dr. Oldsmobile for that matter), should know that the stereotypical Southern sheriff was played by veteran TV actor Joe Higgins who worked through late 1950s and throughout the ‘60s on shows like “The Rifleman,” “Green Acres” and “The Monkees,” with his last televised appearances on “Hill Street Blues,” in 1985. Known for his hate for hot cars and his catch phrase, “You in a heap o’ trouble, boy!” Higgins became as famous as the cars he was continually busting.
This time around, Higgins is on the compassionate side of the argument, agreeing with the busted chicken thief, David, who gets hauled in by one of JW’s attentive – although knuckleheaded – deputies. If you thought the “Dukes” painted the rural South in a bad light, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet…
