For those who have been around the past few decades, the name Hedman Hedders is one that goes back to our childhood. Back when Bob Hedman used to bend and weld pipes for his own race car, and eventually at the bequest of others he would make exhaust headers for fellow racers on the salt flats in the Mojave Desert.
It began as a way for Hedman to finance his own projects, but quickly became a regular business and has been a well-recognized name in headers ever since. With Hedman Hedders found on big name vehicles owned by Don Garlits, Warren Johnson, Shirley Muldowney, and Bob Chandler, to name a few, that familiar logo is easily recognized by enthusiasts everywhere.
Beginning in 2012, Hedman Hedders has sponsored the Nostalgia Street Car Class in NMCA West drag racing. Now called the Hedman nostalgia Street Car Class, it carries the same guidelines as before: all door-slammers up through 1982, and it features handicapped, index-style racing for any car that has doors, fenders and a hood.
The racers who participate in Nostalgia Steet Car Class enjoy this type of racing because it’s open to all door slammers, and you don’t have to keep getting faster. It’s similar to bracket racing, but there are no electronic race aids permitted, and you have a set time to run. You can race against a slower car, or a faster car, but the aim is to get to your index time without breaking out, so it’s not about being faster – it’s about leaving first and being consistent.
