UPDATE: Thanks to the surveillance footage, as well as additional footage released, Huntington Beach Police have identified the driver of the Challenger that struck the 85-year-old woman. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, seen in the video, and he was identified as Taylor Kirby, 24, Of Signal Hill, California. He surrendered to police on Thursday, April 30 after the warrant was issued and has been charged with felony hit-and-run. Kirby was booked, then he posted bail and has been released pending a June 30 court date. There are no details about whether his wife, the passenger in the vehicle, was charged for not reporting the crime.
The Huntington Beach, California, Police Department are asking for the public’s help with this one. Last week, on Wednesday, April 22nd at 2:38PM, a man driving a newer Dodge Challenger was involved in a hit and run when his car struck an 85 year old woman. The felony happened at the McDonalds located at 16866 Beach Boulevard in Huntington Beach, when the elderly woman was crossing the parking lot to her car.
You can see the driver of the Challenger drive past the woman and her party and stop, and as she walked behind the Challenger (by a couple dozen feet, keep in mind) the driver put the car in reverse and hit the gas, striking the woman and knocking her to the ground as her body flew a few feet from the impact. Her friends, also elderly, rushed out to her aid and tried to stop the driver who seemed oblivious to the accident.
Eventually, you can see the driver and a female passenger exit the vehicle and check on the woman, at which point they both returned to the vehicle and sped off, without any concern for the woman’s health or injuries. The Police department is now asking the public for their help in case anyone might be able to identify the hit-and-run driver.
It’s bad enough that the driver didn’t bother to look behind him when he was backing up, but to just leave the scene as he did is disgusting. The woman sustained head injuries, and was taken to a nearby hospital where we understand she has been released, but the suspects have not been identified or located.
The suspect’s vehicle is identified only as a dark grey, newer Dodge Challenger without the front license plate. Based on the wheels and the lack of any emblem on the front fender, it appears to be a 2015 Challenger SXT Plus model with the V6 engine.
