When we think of nitrous-injected cars, most often we’re thinking about high-horsepower drag cars, not stinky diesel engines. But nitrous is an effective power adder no matter what fuel you prefer, and it can make an engine go from mild to wild. But you’ve got to be careful when it comes to nitrous; do it wrong, and you might have yourself an expensive, engine-sized paperweight.
As this next video from the guys over at Nitrous Express shows though, nitrous can cause problems on the engine dyno. This Duramax diesel engine with nitrous injection was placed on the engine dyno for testing…and when they hit the nitrous button, the engine broke itself loose!
Knowing what we know about Nitrous Express, we can’t help but wonder if this Duramax motor belongs to Mike Wood, owner of NX. You see, Mr. Wood drives a rather oddball Mustang, one stuffed with a GM-sourced Duramax diesel engine. This torque monster of a motor was able to propel the diesel Mustang to a top speed of 205 MPH in the Texas Mile back in 2010.
Whoever owns this engine, it is a brutal beast of a motor, as this brief video shows. The dyno test starts off well enough, but once the nitrous injection button is pushed, the Duramax motor lurched sideways and nearly falls off of the dyno. Luckily, the operator was paying attention and quickly shuts the motor down, avoiding certain disaster.
The lesson here? Never underestimate nitrous.
