Transmission mounts have often been called the “rear engine mount” in a classic musclecar. That rear engine mount refers to the rubber transmission mount that supports the tail housing of the transmission in the transmission crossmember.
While the mount might not do much more than insulate the vibrations of the drivetrain to the chassis, Silver Sport Transmissions shows us that the transmission crossmember is a vital component in its PerfectFit transmission packages. If the crossmember does not place the transmission in the proper location, driveline angles can be affected and can create problems in your drivetrain.
As we’ve seen in driveline videos, as well as the graphic provided by SST, a difference in angles between the output shaft and the pinion can actually destroy a U-joint. If the two angles at the end of the driveshaft are not equal to each other it can effect the rotational speed between transmission output and differential input.
But more than just getting the angle to be correct, SST puts effort into engineering a stronger crossmember that won’t flex during hard launches or bad road conditions. With some crossmembers flexing under load or stress, that, too, can affect driveline angles and cause problems with your vehicle.
This is why SST doesn’t provide a “one size fits all” crossmember with its PerfectFit kits. Each crossmember is designed to fit a specific application with regards to vehicle and transmission. Where some crossmembers might be designed to fit multiple applications, or are designed to be adjustable, SST feels that could be a detriment to your drivetrain.
Keeping the angles consistent means locating the transmission at not only the proper height, but making sure it stays there, regardless of power, torque, or road conditions. The strength and accuracy are two important aspects that help SST assure your safety after a transmission swap. While some of these issues might seem small at first glance, the impact they can have on your driveline can be anything but small, and Silver Sport Transmissions sweats the small stuff when it comes to your safety.
