When it comes to famous people and amazing cars, no one is more at the head of the game than Jay Leno. But within the celebrity world, there are plenty of known gearheads who are just as good behind the wheels of their impressive rides as they are in TV series and movies. Tim Allen is one such automotive guru and this week he stopped by Leno’s garage to give his long-time friend a look at one of his most prized Chevys. Check it out in the video above.
Back in the late 60s, the ultimate Camaro didn’t come from the traditional Chevy manufacturing line. Instead, it came from a bit of finagling of production numbers. Of course, we’re talking about the famed Central Office Production Order (COPO) Camaros.
But while these classics can still be found for sale at an occasional auction, you’d be looking at spending a large fortune to get your hands on one, and even then, it still wouldn’t handle like a new car. So how do you remedy this situation, where you want the undeniable good looks of a classic COPO Camaro but the running gear of a newer beast? Well, if you’re Tim Allen, you put those ideas together to create a refreshed classic COPO.
Although Allen’s ’68 Camaro isn’t one of the rare original COPOs, it’s just as nice and even more reliable.
Thanks to Bodie Stroud, who put the car together for Allen (and helped debut the car at the SEMA Show last year), the car features classic styling as well as incredible power and handling capabilities. These perks, of course, come compliments of the Corvette 427 under the hood, Keisler 5-speed driving the wheels, Brembo disc providing stopping power and a Detroit Speed chassis improving the car’s rigidity.
Inside the car, you’ll find a similar mash-up of new and old with a classic looking interior featuring a retro remake dash, no center console, simple bucket seats and a slew of digital gauges. Topped of with perfectly spaced body panels and a nice coat of dark green paint, Allen’s ’68 Camaro is certainly the nicest “COPO” we’ve seen in a long time.
