We always love running across old videos from “Car and Track,” possibly first syndicated television show all about cars. This time around, host Bud Lindemann introduces us to the ’68 Shelby Mustang GT500KR, a car which earned some of the highest praise given to a car. The show aired from 1967 through 1975, and thanks to Speedvision who started showing the original “Car and Track” episodes in the late 90s and early 2000s, the show has reached a whole new audience.
This “Car and Track” review is particularly interesting as we watch as the show drives the snot out of a Shelby KR, just like how the car was designed to be driven. Of course, for those unfamiliar, the ’68 Shelby Mustang GT500KR was unique, as indicated by its “KR” short for “King of the Road.” Equipped with a Cobra Jet 428 and a short-throw 4-speed, the GT500KR was – and still is – a force to be reckoned with.
Lindemann expounds on the Shelby’s stellar points saying that owners might become “a little bit tired of proving to every hot car on the street that his Cobra-ized Mustang is truly the King of the Road.”
Lindemann also continued, saying that the Mustang’s fuel consumption was considerable while rear visibility was hampered by the Mustang’s “flat as a poker table” rear window. The 428 Cobra Jet’s underrated 360hp launched the pony through the traps at 14.5 seconds.
