What Are You Working On: From ’70 Road Runner To Superbird Restomod

F0EF7225-86E4-471B-AF40-C4636FE59214_zpsvznpox8sThe next project-feature we have for the ‘What Are You Working On’ series caught our eye while browsing through the ForBBodiesOnly forum. With far-from-modest aspirations for his 1970 Plymouth Road Runner, member ‘Hemirunner’ has taken on quite the endeavor. But the reason this restomod project stands out is not just the end-goal, but also where it started from.

In a nearly literal way, the project is working from the ground up – Hemirunner basically began with a chassis and 2/3 of the body. When completed, his goal is to have created a street-legal, twin turbo’d ’70 Superbird clone – with all-steel body, all-aluminum Hemi, and a few modern comforts like power windows, air conditioning, power door locks, and remote start. A gearhead has to have a whole lot of confidence to task himself with such a tall order, but start with so little car.

Another reason this project was so eye-catching is that, right out of the gates, Hemirunner makes it clear that this build isn’t one for the purists – which roughly translates to ‘I’m going to do a ton of custom work and make this car extra badass’. And extra badass it shall be, as his goal is 1600 horses at the flywheel and he intends to slam it, shove massive drag radials underneath it, and double it as a street-strip car.

However, the nasty condition of what little body the project started with proved to present challenge after challenge. So far, a great deal of the thread is problem solving and backyard-engineering. From working around the rotten frame-metal and the poor workmanship of the previous owner, to making do without tens of thousands of dollars in specialized equipment, Hemirunner has used some serious ingenuity to be able to accomplish as much as he has so far.

He spends a genuinely admirable amount of time and patience re-working the frame and chassis, trimming and shaping panels, and doing his own custom metal-work for things like the rockers, decks and tubs. And as if the copious amount of frame and body re-working wasn’t enough, Hemirunner even makes his own dry sump oil pan, K-member, shock tower braces, upper and lower control arms, and does extensive fabrication work to his rear-end housing.

This project is definitely on the more extensive end of the spectrum when it comes to home-builds, and it’s only a fraction of the way finished. Starting from about as close to scratch as you can get in your garage, putting in a ton of patience and craftsmanship, and consistently making progress, Hemirunner is a poster child for DIY racecar builds.

E09CD05D-0815-44C3-9731-C8B538A4F058_zpsz5zpv9jaThis Superbird project is one slick build, and we’re sure you’re as excited to see how it turns out as we are. It’s rare that a build is so interesting and fun to follow before it even gets to the ‘go-fast’ parts. But not only is it an entertaining project – it also accomplishes exactly what our ‘What Are You Working On’ thread is aimed at: providing an in-your-face example that it’s entirely possible to build your dream car, that other gearheads are out doing it, and that you should get to spinning wrenches on your own project.

So if you like this build so far and have your own project at home, get working! And if you send us an email and tell us all about it, you could be the next ‘What Are You Working On‘ feature, inspiring car guys everywhere.
