Officially known as the John’s Industries Economy Complete Bolt-In MUSCLEPAK Rearend, it ships as a complete, bolt-in unit with every component already assembled, giving builders a straightforward path to legendary Ford 9-inch strength without piecing together a rearend from a parts list.

Moser expanded its lineup after acquiring Gear FX and John’s Industries, and the MUSCLEPAK line is a direct result of that move. The economy version delivers a fully built rearend suited for street cars, trucks, and hot rods that need to handle real power, and the level of customization available at checkout means it can be tailored to a wide range of builds without straying from a bolt-in format.

The housing starts as a new stamped 9-inch unit, available in Extreme Round, Heavy Duty, or Standard Duty configurations, all built with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) mounting provisions so it lines up with factory suspension points. It uses seamless steel tubing measuring 3-inches in outer diameter with a 1/4-inch wall, paired with John’s high-alloy 31-spline bolt-in axles for added durability over a stock setup.

Supporting hardware includes sealed ball bearings, studs, seals, and heavy duty retainer plates, along with Moser number 7750 housing ends and a T-bolt kit to secure everything together. Inside, the package uses a Moser lightweight nodular-iron case with a standard paper gasket, and it comes standard with an open differential, though upgraded options are available for buyers who need more traction. A 1350-series forged pinion yoke and billet-aluminum pinion support round out the drivetrain hardware, and the ring and pinion set is installed with Timken bearings for accurate, long-lasting operation.

In the Whoa Department, it comes standard with new drum brakes, along with brake lines, brake line tabs, and emergency brake cables, so the rearend is ready to install without hunting down additional parts. Every component in the package is newly manufactured. Moser does not use remanufactured, refurbished, or rebuilt parts anywhere in the build, and the unit leaves the shop completely assembled.

Differential and Traction Upgrades

While the base build comes with an open differential, Moser offers a full range of upgrades for builders who need more traction. Options include Trac-Lok units in light- and heavy-duty spring rates, the Auburn Grip-N-Lock with a friction modifier included, and the Truetrac, which Moser recommends running with a Lucas mineral-based oil and no additives. For builders chasing maximum traction, a Detroit Locker or a Wavetrac differential are also available, along with the option of a Moser steel spool for drag applications that don’t require street manners.

Fluid compatibility varies by differential type, and Moser lists several recommended options at checkout, including Lucas Oil SAE 80W-90 and 85W-140 gear oils, Lucas synthetic 75W-90 and 75W-140 differential lube, Amsoil 75W-90 synthetic gear oil for Wavetrac applications, and Amalie hypoid and full synthetic gear oils. Buyers who prefer to source their own fluid can decline the add-on entirely.

Brake, Yoke, and Pinion Support Options

Braking can be upgraded well beyond the standard drum setup. Moser offers Wilwood Forged Dynalite and Dynapro kits with four-piston calipers and rotors ranging from 11 inches to more than 12 inches, an Explorer disc brake kit with an internal parking brake, and an economy disc brake option with a single-piston caliper and 11-inch rotor. Drag-oriented builders can select a Wilwood Forged Dynalite rear drag brake kit or the Moser Dynamic Drag Brake Kit instead. Additional rotor and caliper finishes, including cross-drilled and slotted rotors and polished or red Wilwood calipers, are also available.

Pinion yoke choices include 1310, 1350, and 1330 series forged yokes in short and tall configurations, along with Moser chrome-moly versions of the 1310 and 1350 series. Pinion support options extend beyond the standard billet aluminum piece to include a Moser Daytona nodular iron support and a Moser Daytona aluminum support for builders who want a specific look or additional strength at that connection point.

Suspension Hardware and Finish Options

For builders addressing suspension geometry at the same time as the rearend swap, Moser offers adjustable lower control arm brackets for GM F-body, A-body, and G-body platforms, along with sway bar mounts for F-body applications. Coilover packages are available for A-body and G-body cars in single-adjustable and double-adjustable configurations, built around Moser and Afco components with a 7-inch stroke and matching chassis mounts.

Finish options round out the build. Standard finish is bare metal, with powder coat available in colors including flat black, semi-gloss black, gloss black, mirror red, silver, and a two-tone silver sparkle finish, applied separately to the housing, case, pinion support, and pinion yoke. Powder coating adds two to three days to the standard build time.

Build Options and Fitment

Buyers configure the rearend by selecting their housing style, bolt pattern, stud size, and gear ratio in addition to the differential, brake, and finish options outlined above. Gear ratio choices span from 3.00:1 up through 5.14:1 for street and Pro Street applications, with a separate range of drag-only ratios available for dedicated track builds.

Fitment covers a wide swath of the muscle car world. Mustang applications run from 1965-2014, including Fox Body and SN95 generations, while GM coverage spans Camaro and Firebird from 1967-2003, Nova from 1962-1976, and full-size cars like the Impala and Caprice through the 1990s. Chevy and GMC trucks are represented from the 1960s through the early 2000s, and Mopar A-body, B-body, and E-body applications round out the list. One important note for GM A-body builders: The UMI coilover kit is not compatible with any of Moser’s lower control arm choices, so that combination should be avoided.
