SEMA 2016: Cometic Shows Off New Steel Shim 9-Inch Housing Gaskets

Cometic Gaskets is particularly well known in the racing and high performance industry for its head gasket lineup, and for good reason. But the company is much more than just head gaskets, and they’re ensuring that people know that, with a focus placed on many of their other new and existing product lines at this year’s SEMA Show. In particular, Cometic is pushing its all-new differential gaskets, of which they currently offer a piece designed for the venerable and widely-used Ford 9-inch.

Cometic’s brand new 9-inch differential gasket seen here is a steel shim gasket with a coating that serves as a bonding agent to allow the rubber to stick. This gasket, according to Cometic’s Micky Hale, is a multiple-use gasket, which allows those in the target markets — hot rodders, street rodders, racers — to re-use it when and if they switch out center sections.

An up-close look at the detail of Cometic's new steel shim gaskets for the Ford 9-inch differentials/housings. This is a brand new addition to the catalog, launched right here at SEMA.

“This gasket isn’t going to tear like paper, and it seals out everything. There’s no sealers needed, so it’s a really nice piece.”

For other applications (but also including the 9-inch), Cometic manufactures differential cover gaskets for GM 10-bolt and 12-bolt, Dana 44, and other rearend housings from their foamet aluminum material, which has an aluminum center with a very thin foam layer and a rubber coating over the top. Cometic utilizes this construction in not only differential cover gaskets, but also in transmission pan gaskets and, according to Hale, on a lot of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, as well.

Cometic’s foamed aluminum gasket design is used in a range of applications, from N/A intake manifolds to differentials to Harley-Davidson motorcycle engines.

“We’ve had this design for quite a while, but people just don’t know about it. It’s probably one of the best sealing options that we have — it’s a lot better than rubber, and it’s certainly a lot better than cork. A lot of high-end transmission builders, this is what they’re using.”
