Final Street Legal TV Winner for Lunati’s Cam Giveaway Announced!

The Lunati Great Cam Giveaway contest for Street Legal TV is officially OVER! But the contest will continue for the next two weeks on our sister magazine, OneDirt.com. So, if you know any Dirt Track fans looking for a cam, send them that way – they will be announcing their contest today!

This Week’s First Winner

The first winner of our Cam Giveaway this week is this 1967 Chevelle, owned by Landon Jones. We read Landon’s story about this project that has started and stopped a couple times, here is his story:

My love for cars started at a very young age with both my dad and grandpa being mechanics and building some decent street machines back in the day from the late 40’s thru the 90’s. As I got older I began narrowing down my favorites until one day when I was about 14 years old I came across an article on a 1967 Chevelle in a issue of Hotrod Magazine. All I knew was that someday I hoped and prayed that I could find and afford my ultimate dream car. Fast forward several years and two weeks before my 27th birthday that day finally came and after about an hour or so and with the help of a friend, we got it started and I drove it home for the small sum of $900.

Well, as we all know life happens and things with a lower level of priority (even though we don’t want to admit it) get put on the back burner. When I first bought the Chevelle I was living in an apartment and restoration was a no go, fortunately my buddy let me store it at his house but it had to stay a rolling chassis which meant limited tear down. Several months later I was able to rent a small corner in a shop and a good portion of the tear down was completed. I then purchased a condo a year later with a one car garage; nothing spectacular but at least I didn’t have to drive anywhere to work on my car.
Over the past ten years I have moved a few times and had to place the Chevelle in storage for a while because of no garage in a new residence, was laid off from my job, now I have a better job, got married, had our first child with another one on the way next month. Less than two years ago we finally found a place with an oversized two car garage which meant plenty of space for me to play out my mad scientist ideas for a street pounding, LS powered (cam – PN60514) and modern suspension 1967 Chevelle.

With a young daughter and number two baby soon to be here I am pushing myself hard to get this car done so I can take my family out and enjoy it. I am trying to get to the point that by summer 2013 I can breathe life into this A-body but there are still a number of expenses and a lot of work left to be done. Over the next several years I know I will be upgrading parts with technology, tuning the suspension for better handling and just enjoying being behind the wheel. Finally, I really hope that my kids develop the same passion for cars as I did with my dad and they love riding around with me in my Chevelle waiting for me to roll on the power.

Last Week’s Winner

I know what many of you are going to say, “He forgot his cam grind number.” While you’re right, this week’s first winner really deserves this cam not for himself, but for his students. Most of us learned about cars from a friend, family member, or a shop class, and it’s no secret that the amount of high school-backed shop classes are on the decline. These are the future motorheads folks. With that being said, we would like to award our first cam to Oak Hills High School shop teacher Mike Stayton. Here’s his story.

I am Mike Stayton and I teach Automotive at Oak Hills High School in Hesperia Ca. I am writing this post on behalf of my students and myself. As you know there are not many high school automotive programs remaining. yep, we don’t get money for neet projects so we have to beg for help from good people like you. Last year I paid for a Lunati camshaft and the students installed it in my wifes car. Needless to say, they loved it. I would like to build a engine with my next years class and a Lunati cam would sure help. We will be building a 350 chevy engine and would like to install a roller cam and lifters. The engine will need to have a heavy lope. ( the kids love it ) I would let you decide the lift and duration to our project. We don’t care. The engine just needs to make the sound of a true muscle car. Turn some heads.

Previous Week’s Winner – Terry Bass Jr.

Our second winner goes to ’66 Charger owner Terry Bass Jr. What we liked about Terry’s story is not the fact that it was a barn find that he’s restoring, or the fact that the original 361 ended up having a cracked block, but it’s the fact that Terry drags his beloved Charger around the country as he changes to different Army stations throughout his career. We all know how costly transporting a car can be, and it shows true dedication that Terry takes his car where he has to go. Here is his story:

I have a ’66 Charger, currently with a 361 BB. I have had this car since 2004 when I found it rotting in a barn on a farm in NW Oklahoma. The 361 I am currently running is the original engine, but unfortunately it is cracked externally. I have to replace it soon and can use all the help I can get building the 440 I have to put in it. This is the first Charger I have had for myself that I get to build. I joined the Army in 2009 and have brought the car to my first duty station with me.

Prior to enlisting in the Army I spent considerable amounts of time and money on the mechanics and upholstery of my car, with the exception of building a new engine. The time and funds for this project are now limited due to work, but I refuse to sell it. I will own this car forever so I want to build everything perfect on it. I grew up building these first generation Chargers with my father so there is a lot of sentimental value involved in mine.

Once I return from my upcoming deployment, the engine build is going to be my #1 priority. I have installed Lunati Bracket Master II cams in many, many Fords and Mopars that I have built in the past and would absolutley LOVE to have the VooDoo 60302 stick to install in my new 440. I love the choppy, old style idle these cams have and I think it would really make this Charger get the respect it deserves. I have all the confidence in the world in Lunati products!!!! They have never failed me and I doubt they ever will.

Terry’s Cam – Lunati PN 60302

Hydraulic. Mid-level performance street cam with excellent drivability. Works well with stock type exhaust manifolds and dual plane intake with mild 4 bbl carb. This is an Awesome 4×4 and performance marine cam where dry exhaust is used. Improved valve springs and roller rockers recommended.

  • Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
  • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 220/226
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .475/.494
  • LSA/ICL: 112/108
  • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
  • RPM Range: 1400-5800

The Lunati/powerTV “Great Cam Giveaway” is still going strong! This massive three-month-long contest is giving away 30 camshafts over the next 90 days, so you’ve got plenty of time to enter to win!
