Considered by many to be one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Ernest Hemingway lived a life that read like one of his books. From bare knuckle boxing and fishing with a machine gun to his passion for booze and the people of Cuba, Ernest Hemingway will forever be remembered as epitomizing everything being a man in the 20th century meant.
Alas, the great writer had a tragic, and sudden death, killing himself with a shotgun in 1961. This left all sorts of loose ends for Hemingway, including the fate of his 1955 Chrysler New Yorker that he had brought with him to Cuba. Autoweek reports that a new documentary is being filmed following the recovery and restoration of Hemingway’s last car.
A determined writer named David Soul went on a months-long mission to find and uncover the Chrysler, which disappeared after Hemingway died. If the name David Soul sounds familiar, it’s because Soul is one-half the popular TV duo from the 1970’s hit show Starsky and Hutch. In Cuba, an American embargo has meant that there are very few new cars on the road. SO the roads are clogged with 50s-era American classics, including Hemingway’s Chrysler, which was passed down between family members.
Soul found the car, and used his British passport to import parts for the restoration. Now he is fighting the American government’s exportation embargo, trying to bring the car back to the states. He is also working with Red Earth Studios to film a documentary about the restoration, which is currently seeking funding. We hope they find it, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime find. If you want to watch a trailer for the documentary, you’ll have to watch it on the Vimeo site unfortunately…but it’s well worth checking out.
