Love ’em or hate ’em, Gassers like this 1965 Mercury Comet were made popular amongst car enthusiasts, thanks to movies like Two Lane Blacktop and American Graffiti in the early ’70s. We can dig a gasser here and there, s when we came across this 404 A/FX recreation on eBay, we wanted to share this beast with you folks. We’d love to tell the story, but the current owner definitely has a better tongue for this Comet.

“This Comet 404 A/FX re-creation has undergone an incredible rebuild,” the original ad details. “It was updated with a Carroll Shelby 427 cubic-inch V8 engine, featuring an aluminum block and matched to a pair of Ford Performance aluminum cylinder heads, a solid roller cam and a Quick Fuel Technology carbureted fuel system,”

Bolted on for even more horsepower is a Hampton Blowers 871 supercharger system, backed by a Jessel belt drive system. “This Mercury Comet also utilizes an Art Carr powerglide automatic transmission, a Performance Automatic bellhousing,” A Strange Engineering aluminum 9-inch center paired with a set of Strange axles ensures the power this Comet is making will safely reach the 15-inch Bogart Racing “Monocoque” wheels and the 32.0×14-15 Hoosier rear tires as well.

“This Comet is making 800-plus horsepower and will run a 9-second quarter-mile,” the ad continues. “It was recently pulling those numbers, while the owner had the car running out at Indy. An absolutely beautiful build, with real gold leafing, tons of polished and chromed pieces in the engine bay and underneath the car. The entire trunk and fuel cell is aluminum, and the Wilwood four-wheel disc-brakes compliment the Vega-style Flaming River steering rack, giving the end-user a little more driveability.
