Pop quiz, hot shot. If you could have any movie car ever, loved the blue oval, and thought that Steve McQueen was the coolest guy ever, what would you choose? Chances are you said a “Bullitt Mustang” faster than a black Charger can explode at a road side gas station.
Steve McQueen has passed on, but his son Chad has been carrying the torch on his behalf for the Mustang faithful brethren ever since. He helped Ford put together the ’01 and ’08 Bullitt Mustang packages, but had always wanted to put together a ’68 like his dad drove in the movie. Now he has.
In partnership with Gateway Classic Mustang, a “new” rendition of the Highland Green ’68 fastback is being created from the ground up, beginning with a new Dynacorn body shell.
The suspension and brakes are all modern units from RRS, with a unique coilover strut system up front and dual piston brake calipers all the way around. The rear suspension is a Watt’s link with an extra long torque arm that runs about a third the length of the car underneath.
Power is supplied by a Roush built 450 horsepower 347 small block backed by a T-45 5-speed manual transmission from Keisler. We can only imagine that Steve himself would have loved it, as the mods to the modern interpretation correct all of the one-legger, wheel hopping, no turning problems that his movie car had.
One last item to mention is that the modern interpretation of this car cannot be called a “Bullitt,” as that name still belongs to Ford. The version that you see here is called the “Limited Edition 1968 Steve McQueen Signature Mustang.”
