$1,800 Doesn’t Buy Much But It Did Buy A 1970 Torino Cobra Drag Pack

1970 Ford TorinoIt was an average day at the water cooler, when Michael was chatting with a lady coworker. During the conversion the subject of cars came up and the lady mentioned that her brother had about 50 musclecars on his property including β€œtwo Cobra cars” which she believed were Mustangs. Michael asked if he was interested in selling, only to learn that he turned down a $20K offer for one of them.

A few years went by and the lady came to Michael to tell him that her brother was interested in making a deal. Michael drove to his property and learned that one of the Cobras was not a Mustang, rather a 1970 Ford Torino Cobra. This was a 429 Cobra Jet with a shaker hood. The exterior was discolored with minor surface rust and the car was a derelict. Michael asked for a price and he was told simply “19.” He figured 19K was way too much for the cars condition so he kept talking, hoping he could bring the price down a tad.

After awhile he made an offer for 17 but the owner insisted that he wouldn’t take less than 18 – 18 hundred that is. He said he’d even throw in a spare parts car for free. Michael couldn’t believe this offer and accepted on the spot. It turns out this 1970 Torino wasn’t just a standard Cobra but a Cobra drag pack car with Shaker hood and 3.91 rear axle with locker.

The 1970 Ford Torino Cobra was given a slight rear redesign from 1969, its body was given a slightly more aerodynamic coke bottle styling. The 429 Cobra Jet mill produced 375 horsepower, thanks to a set up featuring forged pistons, a 780 CFM Holley carb and a solid lifter cam. The motor ran to a 4-speed manual transmission delivering the power to the Detroit Locker 3.91 rear axle. The whole combination easily roasts the tires. So is this the deal of the century or what?
