When looking back over some of the coolest, most successful and plain bad ass factory-built race machines, people have a tendency to overlook Pontiac’s awesome Super Duty Catalinas.
Maybe because the Catalina never got the same fame as the full-sized sibling, the Impala Super Sport 409 (thanks for nothing, Brian Wilson), or maybe because the 421 Tempest, which followed shortly thereafter, eclipsed the Catalina’s numbers.
Either way, the 421 Catalinas are as deserving of praise as any of the factory-built competitors, particularly when considering this pale-blue example. Driven by Larry Quinn, this Nostalgia Super Stock ’62 Pontiac (titled “Blast From The Past”), this heavy-hitting Poncho definitely packs one heck of a punch.
This video was captured back in 2007, at the Gateway Raceway. Track conditions were good, and although the air conditions were far less than ideal, Quinn drove the Pontiac to a huge win with a 8.95-second pass at 147.8 miles per hour.
