Whether it is original and maintained or a complete restoration job, there is nothing much better to a true car enthusiast than a piece of streamlined old-school American muscle. This 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT convertible once used as an Indy 500 pace car is no exception.
According to RK Motors, it is 1 of 100 Indy 500 pace cars, and just 1 of 33 used for parade laps. This video shows just how awesome this car is inside and out.
With its sexy lines and creases, this concours-restoration Cyclone has correct Cardinal Red paint and white leather interior. Also true to the car is the 390-cubic-inch Interceptor V8 motor with a 77,353 on the clock. The beefy V8 capable of 335 horses and 427 lb-ft of torque is mated to a true 3-speed C6 auto transmission. The Cyclone also features a Ford 9-inch rear axle, factory power drum brakes and power steering, and 15-inch styled steel wheels. It also features the contrasting Indy 500 Pace Car decals that it once sported during its golden days as a pack leader.
With its professional restoration with perfect attention to detail, panels have been aligned perfectly and the car sports a GT-specific hood, a bright white room, and chrome driver’s mirror, and Comet and Cyclone badges.
This sweet thing can be yours for about $59,000 picked up at RK Motors in Charlotte, North Carolina. If interested in the car, the sale includes vintage marketing materials as well as historic photos. Not a bad deal for a fun part of history!
