Dodge Halts All Hellcat Orders To Tackle Massive Build Backlog

DG015_146CL_jpg_900x900_q100To call the launch of the new 707 horsepower Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats a success would be a massive understatement. Dodge had initially estimated they’d sell about 4000 Hellcats throughout 2015. After less than half that amount of time, they’ve built and delivered over 2200 cars, but they’ve received more than 9000 orders so far – which equates to about half a billion dollars in sales.

DG015_152CL_jpg_900x900_q100Both the Challenger and Charger Hellcat use a host of unique components, including 15.4 inch disc, six-piston caliper Brembo brakes, the stout ZF 8HP90 8-speed automatic (currently only in use in the Hellcats, the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Wraith, and the Bentley Mulsanne), and of course the various unique components that comprise the 6.2-liter Hellcat V8, including the 2380cc twin-screw supercharger bolted on top of it. Chrysler won’t say where the bottleneck in production is, but the bottom line is that they literally cannot crank these things out fast enough.

The shortage has caused some calamity, with the disparity between supply and demand causing some shady dealers to take advantage of the situation. Likely in response to the growing problem, Dodge has decided to hit the pause button new Hellcat orders:

“Due to unprecedented demand for the 2015 Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats,” the company said in a statement, “we are temporarily restricting orders while we validate current orders that are in the system.”

The story broke late last week via Allpar.com, a generally reliable source for Mopar-related news and rumors. The site added that they expect orders to resume in August.

When the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat was announced last year, Dodge CEO Tim Kiniskis lovingly referred to the Hellcat as a “science project”. Chrysler really just didn’t know what the world would make of these beasts. Well Tim, it looks like the math checks out.
